Detailed station information

  • May 1960 - January 2017
  • McMurdo data prior to 1964 have been multiplied by 24.5 to normalize for the IGY/NM64 change occurring at that time.
  • Small changes (<0.6%) to the McMurdo count rates were made after 29 March 2011 to compensate for changes in the thermal insulation of the monitor.
  • In preparation for a move of the McMurdo neutron monitor to the South Korean station at Jang Bogo, Antarctica, one section (6 tubes) was removed for shipment
  • From 14 November, 2014, the McMurdo station will operate with only 2 sections (12 tubes) until sometime in 2016, when the 12 McMurdo counters will be shipped to Jang Bogo. All three sections will be together again by early 2018.
  • The McMurdo station was shut down completely on 7 Jan, 2017. Please use the Jang Bogo station at NMDB as a replacement
